I gathered together a few different light sources to see what effects I could generate.
These included a normal torch as well as a flashing "bouncy ball"
I set the camera up on a tripod with a remote trigger and just tried different effects.
Here is a contact sheet for those attempts......
To be honest, I don't particularly like any of the work I produced with these trials.
None of the images are sharp enough or interesting enough.
Image "Light Trails 4_23.jpg probably being the most interesting
None of the above images were crisp enough and that was all down to the set up, back to the drawing board I think.
But I had certainly learned a coupe of things about capturing light in the process. Getting the right aperture, speed and focus were all critical in getting a good image.
I decided to try a bit of still life, at least this way the subject matter would be still, I could set up the camera to a particular setting, and get a "in focus" and "crisp" image......
This trial turned out to be a little better, The images were more crisp and it was easier to control.
What I didn't do was expose the images long enough to the light source to make them bright enough.
I felt the image DSC_007 Tulips 1 was the most effective, and that the settings used on the camera were correct.
I had set the camera at a focal length of 40 mm, using my 18-200 lens. I had set the f stop at f/10 and the ISO at 100. The shutter speed was on bulb and the duration was 212 seconds.
The light source wasn't strong enough though.
More practice and research is required to produce images that I will be happy with and that will be good enough in my opinion to get included in the photo book.
